I'm Benjamin Todd. I founded 80,000 Hours, a non-profit that researches the world's most pressing problems and helps people find careers tackling them.

Over a decade ago, we realised that the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) could be the most important issue of our time – an idea that has only become more plausible the last few years.

There’s a chance (though not a guarantee) we’re surprisingly close to AI systems that could automate R&D itself, unleashing a far faster rate of technological change. A combination of AI and robotics could eventually automate labour, leading to an industrial explosion.

This could go very well or very badly.

Here I write about:

  • The key developments towards transformative AI

  • How to ensure AI development goes well for society

  • What this means for your career and life decisions

Some key posts so far:

In the past, I wrote the 80,000 Hours career guide, and much more.

I also write about career strategy, philanthropy, China and personal development.
